Does anyone know of a CD that has some clawhammer with bottleneck on it? I am starting to do it some and would like to listen to multiple clawers that use it to get ideas and learn.

I have some nice recordings of Gus Cannon, I tried to do some slide on the banjo but being also a dobro player I prefer to slide on that instrument...

Not CDs as requested, but a few videos with clawhammer bottleneck blues related songs (technically, none of these three songs is actually a blues - but they're similar to blues):

There are other clawhammer blues that are not played with a slide, and other slide blues that is not played clawhammer style, in the video section of my page (or on my YouTube channel). I think only 'God Move on the Water' has clawhammer slide throughout...in the others it comes and goes (if I remember correctly what is in these particular versions- I tend to play stuff differently every time).

Speaking of blues , I really like the way Marc Nerenberg plays and sings see that my grave is kept clean (one kind favor). I stumbled upon it on You tube. That guy really does a great job on that song!

Mark, "God Moves on the Water" is one of the coolest banjo blues that I have ever heard. I'm knocked out by that one, great stuff.

There is a guy on youtube who goes by "rpeek" . He does some stuff w/ banjo including building 5 strings from tenors and also gas cans, etc; Apparently good at wrenching hot rods, too. He does a few songs in a clawhammer style w/ a slide, they sound pretty interesting.And... he looks like Santa!

Marc, that's great music. Love it. Now my interest is whetted. Do you use a higher bridge and/or nut for playing bottleneck, or is that banjo set up in a "standard" way?

Not clawhammer, but I did use a slide (5-string played with a flat pick, bass drum, hi-hat and kazoo. I miss my one man band set-up. I'm sure my neighbors don't though.)

Multitudinous thanks to those who've expressed interest/appreciation for my banjo blues. I used to play in a duo with the multi-faceted and extremely talented Michael Jerome Browne, who is predominantly a blues player (though with a wonderful command of other genres as well). On our blues stuff, generally, he played blues guitar & I played harmonica. I kinda missed playing blues without his guitar work, and just found myself drifting in that direction on the banjo.

mwc9725e: The banjos are set up "the normal way" (but at clawhammer bridge height, not bluegrass). The Fairbanks has somewhat higher action than the long neck Vega; but I haven't altered the action on either banjo from the way they were set up when I got 'em.

I use an 11/16 Stanley socket wrench for a slide. I like how it doesn't reach the fifth string and it has really good weight, which is an important consideration in slide playing. I've always used socket wrenches as slides, and I've lost (or had stolen) a few over the years. I have found it not that easy to find just the right replacement that feels good on my finger. For this particular one (after leaving my last one in Tanzania!) I ended up buying a whole set of around 20 socket wrenches, just to find the right one for this job.

(Hey Hunter: I just got that album of yours recently after hearing that song (Gonna Need Somebody on Your Bond) on your page. Like all of your work, it's great!)

Thanks Marc. I like your playing on the videos above too, especially "God Moves on the Water", great song. I'll have to give a socket wrench a try. My father showed me how to cut the neck off a bottle when I was starting to play so that's what I've always used.

Bruce Cockburn played slide banjo on one of his early albums, I think it was Night Vision. It wasn't clawhammer though. I've seen Ken Hamm play slide banjo live, but am not sure if he's recorded any...also not clawhammer.

Marc, The local hardware folks are used to me coming in for capo sleeve material, new tubing for guitar stands and boxes that fit 6 mouth harps, but if you want to see some jaws drop, ask them if you can try on some sockets for size.
