The new EP from the Carolina Chocolate Drops is a collaboration with a gypsy stringband from NYC, Luminescent Orchestrii. It is a REALLY fun album! Only four songs, but they're great. Also has a hip-hop feel, but don't let that deter those who don't care for rap. It's only a subtle influence and just makes the music funkier. The album comes out tomorrow. Here's my review:

The Drops are bringing Appalachian string band music to an audience who would have NEVER listened to this type of music-EVER. They've taken alot of heat from fellow African Americans, about selling out, etc, but they are moving forward with a vengence. Hats off to the Drops and may their infectious, rambunctious original style bring over many converts, black, white, or whatever.

That's what I love about music. Has the power to bring people together. I'm a pretty politically-motivated person, but music has helped me form solid friendships with people of totally opposing points of view. No matter the politics, we can all agree on a great fiddle tune!

For anyone around Lyons CO in August, they just announced that the Drops are going to play at the Planet Bluegrass Folk Fest this year. It's a great, great time.
