Don't worry about the tennis ball.
Set up a pair of those plastic skate wheels, one on a bolt, one on an electric drill, mounted securely so that the distance between them is slightly less than the size of a tennis ball.
Build a little hopper over it, with a normally open pushbutton at the bottom of the hopper.
Train the dog that, if he drops a ball in the hopper, it will hit the switch, turn on the drill, spin the wheel, and LAUNCH the ball like a pitching machine.
It'll keep him busy while you're occupied elsewhere.

<--- Java was a precocious pup. We had him in puppy classes, an obedience class with me, a junior trainer class with my daughter, an agility class. He was <somewhat> under control by two.

Ok I'll calm down now and try to refrain from getting JEALOUS. You see guys and gals I've always had a lab, always but....since we moved into this TINY house it's only big enough for YORKIES. Don't get me wrong I really like(ok who am I kidding love) yorkies. But every time you guys and gals post pictures of your LABS. Well it makes me say the least JEALOUS........

His name is Guus. It's a mix of Labrador and Friese Stabij.
We've had dogs before but this one is by far the most easy.
We were amazed when at the second day he climed into the bench
to go asleep. Then he saw a cat basket in the room and decided that would
be even more comfortable. So now he's sleeping in a cat basket in the bench.
And best of all he doesn't mind me playing banjo or even fiddle!

He`s lovely. You`ll find your walks take a lot longer. Boy dogs have to wee up every blade of grass. I`ve just found this out in the last year after always having girls.

Comment for Sandra, boy pups do not take longer to walk then the girl pups for they may stop to wee on every other blade of grass but the girl has to stop and check out that blade of grass ...... or, at least, mine do.
