I a saw this on the news and Nancy Reagan said a few words. She looked really good and so alert. I got tickled when she said Ron was 100 yrs. old, and then said it don't seem possible that it has been that long. Micki

I missed most of the Reagan years. Bush 41 and Clinton, too. I was so busy with my career that I barely knew who was even in the White House up until about 2000, and I had no idea who ran Congress.
But most of what I've read about Reagan, I like.
He made mistakes like every other president, but he could acknowledge them and learn from them; and I think he did make the country a better place.
We need another leader like him, as far as I'm concerned.

Seemed like a good guy who certainly deserved "the great communicator" label. Was able to bring a strong spirit and patriotism to the country when it needed it most. He would be considered a moderate (RINO?) by tea party standards of today and his deficit spending would not go over well. A deeper look in to his record shows he was flawed like every President (and human) before him. IMO as a supporter of the Concord Coalition I would definitely not deem him worthy of "best ever" discussion....although his tax hikes later in his term recouped about 40% of the huge deficits created earlier in his Presidency - according to Reagan's Budget Director, David Stockman.

I remember standing in line for gas under the president before him (not naming any names), and the "WIN" buttons that would magically cure stagflation. Thank goodness someone came into office and got us out of the economic mess (by which today's pales in comparison) that we were in, and started us on the period of the greatest sustained economic growth in American history. If he did nothing else, I would think that everyone, regardless of party, could appreciate that.

I was at a Bob Hope show in the 80's at Pope AFB, NC. During the filming of the show, Air Force One landed and President Reagan came on stage. It was his birthday and they had a cake and gave pieces of the cake to people in the audience. I sat in the row behind the press so I got a good view, but no cake. It was a neat experience. A bunch of stars from the 80s were there - Kirk Cameron, Brooke Shields, the band Alabama, Barbara Mandrell, the Cosby show wife (can't remember her name) and some of Bob's friends like Lucille Ball and Phylis Diller. Happy Birthday President Reagan.

To post the opinion that one president is greater than some or all other presidents IS a political post.
Dustin TN did not "bring" politics into it.
Dustin TN pointed out that politics had already been brought into it, and that the Mods let it slide, in what appears to be a sad disregard for the (unclear) Rules.
In my only other post on this thread, I was very careful to comment only about ONE scene in ONE film, and not to render any opinion on Ronald Regan's political career or policies, neither pro nor con.
As a Carlinite, it is against my Religion to believe that any elected official will be allowed to do anything radically different from what the Real Owners want him or her to do.
Mr. Carlin's opinions are available on Youtube, for whomever can bear the profanities which he so enjoyed spewing.

It aint' partisanship (maybe ideology, though) because I sure don't align myself with either major party. There are enough wealthy conglomerates to their bidding for them. The anti-government/anti-regulation economic dreams of RR came home to roost in the repeal of Glass Steagall (signed into law by Clinton, for the record). How did that anti-regulation work out for us? Also, happy birthday to the man who illegally sold arms to IRAN to fund anti-democratic militias in Nicaragua. Great man. Best president ever.

What we mean to do, and what others

That's a good point, but the fact that people slammed Senator Kennedy upon his death is no excuse for people to do the same to RR upon celebrating his birth.

Yep, we (myself included) tend to be a harsh and judgmental group, attached to our own opinions and not open to other's. And since we draw on people of all kinds, it tends to be equal opportunity bashing. It's human nature, and we seem to be slightly more human than the average homo sapiens.
There was a lot of good in Ronald Reagan. It's worthy of acknowledgement. Let's respect those who have gone before with generosity; it will be our turn soon enough.

To acknowledge the great achievements is one thing, but it should be done with perspective. I was not alive during the Regan years, but I know that not all that he did was wonderful, especially if you were poor or a Nicaraguan, as pointed out by Dustin. Not to say he didn't do great things. I think the fact that he initiated the largest tax increase in California history (up until that time) is interesting though. One of the greatest presidents ever?... I can't say, but certainly not the best. I think Lincoln holds that honor.
