Here is a FREE instructional on one of Allen Shelton's trademark licks.

It was used in "Why Not Confess" amongst others.

It uses a major 7th passing note and works over the I chord in any key.  I recommend practicing it in different keys and different sections of songs.  It can be used in backup and Lead playing.

I will be doing a series of these, demonstrating various licks/sounds he used throughout the years.

BTW, don't try to do a hammer-on from the 12th fret to the 3rd, you could get hurt :)

Thanks,

Jody Hughes

Hey Jody

Very good on the presentation.

This is some great stuff. Thanks a million for posting this.

I would spend hrs trying to figure this out  and probably get it wrong.

 Regards, O.D.

Interesting lick Jody thanks for sharing...  Alan Shelton had his own distinctive sound/style and I looking forward to hearing more.

Great lick, Jody--thanks! For the right hand, are you playing it TITM, with the thumb crossing over to the 2nd string?

Jody Hughes - Posted - 12/02/2011:  15:56:25

For the Lick my Right hand is as follows

Thumb on 4th string

Thumb on 3rd string

Index on 2nd

Middle on 1st and so forth

So you are double-thumbing.

Awesome lick.  I really like it.  Can't wait to work it into my playing.  And I'm looking forward to the other stuff you have up your sleeve.

Here is part two in the series.  This time I demonstrate one of his favorite endings.

Hi Jody

Great to see you doing another Alan Shelton lick. We hear so much Scruggs, Stanley and Reno sounds and it's hard to comprehend and we often forget that there are so many other great banjo pickers from the past who had their own distinctive sound/style and we rarely get a chance hear let alone learn anything of their style.

It is just 'Brilliant' you are taking the time to do this.

Thank you very much, Jody.  You do a really good job explaining and not going too fast.  I think I can learn and incorporate both of these licks pretty easily.  One suggestion is to somehow get a shot of your right hand at least once when showing the lick slowly.  Most folks are visual like myself and would benefit from seeing your picking hand.  I hope that you are able to post more instructional lick videos soon.  Thanks again!
