Hello

I'm Rudy from Germany playing clawhammer banjo and Scruggs style. This year I will visiting Ohio between the 10th to 25 of September. I would like to get in contact in this time with other people who also playing old time and bluegrass music or to get informations of workshops, festivals, concerts or sessions in this region. I will stay mainly near Cincinatti. More informations about me under tschebelin or halden-music.de

I live in Columbus, and try to attend as many bluegrass and old-time events as I can (although I only play clawhammer).  I was going to suggest the Hylo Brown Bluegrass Festival in Mechanicsburg - about 90 minutes Northeast of Cincinnati - but it looks like it is not being held this year. In 2008, 2009, and 2010 it took place in mid-September, which would have been just right for you.  I don't know of any other good options that time of year - most other Ohio bluegrass festivals are held between May and August.  One major exception - the Southern Ohio Indoor Bluegrass Festival - is very convenient to Cincinnati but takes place in March and November.   The two other September festivals I know of are probably too far from Cincinnati to help you much: The Country Stage Music Park Festival on September 21 & 22 in Nova, Ohio, way up near Akron and Cleveland, and The Mohican Bluegrass Festival on September 13-15, about halfway between Columbus and Cleveland.  Of the two, the Mohican Festival line-up has more national-level acts.

It is a bit early to be checking for workshops and concerts, since most September events probably haven't been booked yet.  You might keep an eye on these websites:

centralohiobluegrass.com/ (Central Ohio Bluegrass Association, based in the Columbus area)

westernohiobluegrassassociation.com/ (Western Ohio Bluegrass Association, based in Bellefontaine)

The Buckeye Bluegrass website - covering the whole state - doesn't seem to have been updated since 2005.

I don't  know of any old-time festivals in Ohio in September - there are a handful during the summer.  You could try contacting the folks at the Famous Old Time Music Company, as they seem to have connections to the old-time music scene throughout the state:  fotmc.com/ .  They might know of workshops, concerts, and sessions taking place in Cincinnati while you are there.

If you happen to find yourself in Columbus, I'm sure you would be welcome at the weekly old-time jam (session) that I sometimes attend.

Actually, having looked in more detail at the Famous Old Time Music Company website, I realize it is devoted primarily to bluegrass, not old-time.  Still worth contacting, however.

If you're flying into Cincinnati, the airport is actually between Cincinnati and Florence, Kentucky, so check for Kentucky jams as well. You might also check on nearby events in Indiana, since you will be close to the South-East corner of Indiana also. I'm in Cleveland,Ohio, but 4 1/2 hours away, at the opposite end of the state. There are some jams and open mic's in our area, but I can understand if the drive is too far. Columbus is a lot closer, if you can make the drive. It's probably about 2 hours from Cincinnati. Dayton, Ohio is about an hour north Cincinnati, there may be some events there as well. I guess I don't know much about the Cincinnati area, but I expect we must have BHO members in the area, and some will probably speak up soon.
