Art-i-so appears to have been a jobber and music publisher in New York City.
It has been impossible to find out anything about them. I have tried.
They made themselves so obscure that even the headstock engraver put the second dash in the wrong place.

The beautiful peghead of another Art-i-so - manufactured by Puntolillo/Majestic
The greyish tone comes from a prep-sanding prior to a restoring. Do BTW notice the 3D-shape of the front - why on earth haven´t others used this fantastic feature?

I had the Cremin connection but got stuck on the name: "Art-i-so Music Co." (attached).
I did not know about the Cremin music school.
By the way, I contacted the seller and the serial number for this ebay banjo is 33003 stamped on dowel and rim and the inside of the pot and resonator is painted silver. There is no "Bacon" stamp on the dowel or elsewhere.

Kent - That is the kind of Art-i-so I have seen most frequently. I mean with the metal badge tacked to the peghead.
I'll bet the craigslister is a Slingerland.
I'll bet our BHO'er Slingerland would know.

For what it's worth (my opinion, that is!) I'm leaning toward it being a Stromberg-Voisinet. It doesn't have the more ubiquitous S-V head stock shape but the plain marquetry with the small squares and more importantly that particular center resonator bolt are two features I've seen together on S-Vs and NOT Slingerlands. I've also never seen the same inlay on a Slingerland neck. I've also seen all three of these particular features on S-V banjo ukes and never on Slingerland banjo ukes. From my observations over time, if the head stock shape doesn't ID a vintage instrument definitively, then you should go with secondary characteristics... in total! These characteristics are first, wood working characteristics like heel shape, pot construction and angle of the head stock border cut and then choice of hardware like lugs, hooks and nuts. In the end, it's an educated guess informed by years of compulsive observation of all these points! Some ID points I'd bet the farm on and although I'm relatively sure about this ID, I wouldn't bet everything on it!
