It's like the guy who went fishing: Just for the halibut!big

I'll be bringing a Squared Eel banjo to raffle off to help pay for the gas to get home.

Bring any instrument you've improvised, cobbled up, made, or modified.

The stranger the better. It's an exhibition, not a competition, so don't worry about only winning the bronze.

Or, just show up and sing along.

Burnsville NC.

Saturday, Nov 17

I'll post the address of the hall, once I dig up the message.

Heck it might just be worth a trip up there to meet you in real life, Mike!

That's 2 hours from my house. And, I have good friends who live closeby in Spruce Pine (in fact, driving to Spruce Pine this weekend to do some studio recording).

Maybe post another reminder as the date gets closer Mike? You know how banjo pickers are...

I'm a half hour drive from Burnsville and have several PVC flutes and whistles I've made so I'll be there.

UPDATE:

Here's the "Where & When", but DO let me know if you're coming to the party, too.

(From Lucy's e-mail)

=======================================

Yancey County Public Library

Burnsville Community Room

321 School Circle

Burnsville, NC 28714

It seats 80.  Also, there is a great video set-up - if you want

to bring DVDs - like that fastest banjo player in the world

playing your Squared Eel or anything else.

The library closes at 1, and so we'll have it at 1, so anybody

still there can just come upstairs, but we can be as loud as we

want, cuz all the patrons will be gone.  Bad part is we can't

have alcohol there (although I certainly will not bother to

inspect anyone's flasks).

I have to be at the Town Center at 3 to start setting up for

the party, but will come back to lock up the library if you

will call me from there to let me know you're done.

Also, anybody coming for the National Trashional is

automatically invited to my birthday party, but they have to

RSVP so I know who to expect.

Getting to meet Mike is worth the trip people! wink

From what I see and hear so far, you are the only three Hang Out members coming.

Anybody else, please let me knlw as soon as you're sure, so there will be enough chairs and snacks.

Hi, all.

If you're coming to the First Annual National Trashional, you really ought to stick around Burnsville that night and come to the Year of the Dragon/Month of the Scorpio party at the Burnsville Town Center.  It's a private birthday party (my 60th) but Hot Duck Soup is playing (it's their anniversary).   This is a leave-no-trace byob & a finger-food to share party.  I'll have my own dishes and glasses for you to use if you don't travel with yours.  (There is no such thing as disposable.)  RSVP here, or call my cell eves/weekends 828-208-4731.

Coolness. This looks like it will be great fun.

And fun to meet Mike Gregory. As I told Mike in PM, it's a chance for me to get to show him I'm not the ass I really am :)

Thanks for much Lucy for the invite. 98% certain I'll be there. Noting holding me back at this point.

And HAPPY BIRTHDAY LUCY ! !

Mike, I am on the other side of the mountains...out in the Middle of No Where.

I can't be there.

But please know that my thoughts are there with all of you.

Play a little tune for me...Please?

Post pictures so I can enjoy some of the fun things with the lot of you. Much appreciated.

Hey, we made the "Yancey Common Times"

Here's the story, as it appeared in the paper.

==================

If you have ever stretched rubber bands across a tissue box as a harp, or put paper over a comb for an improvised kazoo, you might enjoy coming to see what shows up at the National Trashonal rally in Our Fair City.

Plastic plumbing trombones, cookie-tin banjos,  the internationally known (but largely ignored) “Squared Eel, which is a banjo made of scrap lumber and a cut-open pop bottle.

Mike Gregory, from Grafton, Wisconsin, will be one of the featured speakers, and will tell the story of the Squared Eel.

There will also be a 30-minute demonstration of how to build your own “Wonderful One-Stringed Wunjo”, a single-stringed banjo that anyone can play. It’s basically an average-sized cottage cheese tub on a stick, so it is suggested that, if you want to build one right then, right there, bring your own clean plastic tub. Mike will be bringing the rest of the pieces.

=======================

I'll try to remember to take pictures of stuff, though I'm not as good at taking them, as I am at downloading other folk's images.

I'll post comments & pictures Tues or Weds.

And here you have it.

From left to right:

The venue for the rally.

The sign on the door, which spelled my name perfectly.

Amber the Librarian who helped get things set up.

The Throbbing Multitude of eager attendees.

(Jude showed up later, but it's always nice to meet another OutHanger.)
