So here's the deal... I am a beginner and have started learning three finger Scruggs style playing. I know nothing about Celtic except that I love the sound...In fact, I think I like it better than typical bluegrass. Are there some easy newbie friendly songs I can learn or is the Celtic sound achieved by using some other style that is just going to confuse a beginner...

The Kesh Jig and Kerry Slide are good beginner tunes for Celtic 3 finger style - I  play a lot of this style if it interests you.

Also check out out Tom Hanway here at the BHO - he has some tab books for sale in this style also

I'll be watching this topic as the Celtic sound has always appealed to me, as well. Thanks for the links.

I need to do some research, however on the characteristics of Celtic music. I know it when I hear it, but why?!

Tony Trischka's book Fiddle Tunes for the Banjo has a bunch of celtic tunes, tabbed out for 3-finger playing. They're more in the intermediate/advanced ranged though.

Brian Boru's march is pretty easy.. however;  it's a march so the timing is a bit different than 4/4 bluegrass stuff.   good luck.. I dig playing irish tunes too..  Especially because melodic banjo comes easier to me..
