After BHO member Greg Connor wrote this for me (and about me) a couple of weeks ago, I kept listening to it every time I was feeling tired of winter, which at this time of year is several times a day if not oftener. Somehow every time I listened to it, it reminded me of my dad. I know he would have liked it.
Then suddenly I woke up and realized he was born on this day back in 1924, and I decided to record Greg's tune in honor of him, and the occasion. He would have been 89.
Banjo is The Mutt (70s StewMac aluminum pot wonder-jo). I play in C tuning, some 3-finger without picks, and some clawhammer. The sweet sound of this banjo never ceases to amaze me. A lot of that is from the KatEyz bridge Mike Smith made for it.
Anyway, if you're sick of winter, this is an uplifting little tune that might just help you hang on.

Nice picking my friend. It's fun to hear how a song can evolve and grow.
Nice performance on this one!

Man, that's getting some pretty music out of the mutt. Not sure is mine sounds that nice. Playing it a lot less these days. But, I'm not as good as you are yet, either. Thanks for that lovely piece.

Yeah but yours looks a lot nicer.
I acquired mine from a guitar player friend who did the basic assembly work but never did inlays or anything. It sat in a closet almost 20 years before he gave it to me. The 2 things that made The Mutt a really nice were a KatEyz bridge that Mike Smith made after hearing what it sounded like "before", and then a Ren head. I recently put on the Rowe Paintsville tailpiece I got from Mike Rowe a while back and that was even better than the Presto I had on it before. It never was and still isn't a bluegrass banjo, it's not the most playable neck you can find, but do like the sound for a lot of the oddball stuff I do. So much that I bought a second one that came up in the BHO classifieds a while ago. It's sitting at my brother's place in Peninsula, OH waiting for me to come over and make it into The Mutt Mark II.
