Recorded by and posted on YouTube by a friend of mine.  I was accompanied on stage by friends Phil Mooney on mandolin and Mark Warner on guitar. I didn't know the guy on washboard, but what he added sounded great I thought.

I really like this.

(I'm obviously not one of those people who dislike this song - and their numbers are legion around here, for some reason).

I think the arrangement and the singing are both really good here.

The washboard is a really nice touch, too.

Brandon,

I like the cover. Your voice sounds really nice. I like your intro about the song, but I think you shouldn't feel the need to say anything about it. If YOU like it, and like playing it, then you gotta do it. My only disappointment with the song, is that that whole album is a winner, so I'm sad that people don't cover/talk about the other tracks, and only WW, which as most of the album is a cover itself.

Just my thoughts, don't mean to take away from your playing. I enjoyed the vid!

Also, were you using the mic setup that you won on E-bay?

Yes Nick.... I am using that condenser mic I bought on ebay. I think the banjo could have been mixed in a little stronger but it's hard to tell; as my friend only recorded it on her I-Phone.

I'm with ya' on some of the other songs Old Crow does too. I think many lend themselves to clawhammer or simple 2-finger. I have been working on "Take 'em Away" lately, and will probably continue to work on others from Old Crow.

Funny... I've wanted to see Old Crow in concert for several years now. I have checked their site on occasion... hoping for a show coming somewhere in NY to a venue where it would be fun to see them. So this morning as a result of my post and the responses here, I happened to go to their site to see exactly which albums which songs were on. I probably only visit their site by chance once a year. Well... I just found out they are playing at Brewery Ommegang in Cooperstown NY on May 26th. I just bought tickets for my wife and I (it also happens we are big fans of Ommegang beers too)!  Brewery Ommegang specializes in traditional Belgian style beers and have an outdoor concert venue where they hold a regular spring/summer/fall concert series and provide camping; so we're going for the weekend with "Pauline the Butterbean" our vintage camper. Woo Hoo!

I wish they still had Willie Watson.  Loved that guy's voice.  Yeah, I too still like playing and singing this song, despite its being somewhat played to death in roots music circles.

A fragment was written and played by Bob Dylan ( perhaps the Chorus ). Old Crow Medicine Show expanded on it and recorded the commonly known version.

As Jim has posted above, there is a recording of the Dylan version (which can be heard on the YouTube video Jim links).

Dylan wrote it for the soundtrack of the movie Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, and two demo versions were recorded during one of the recording sessions for that film. It's more than just a sketch. It had verses and a chorus.

Like so much unreleased Dylan material, it became available in a low quality bootleg, in which the words to the verses were indecipherable.

Ketch Secor had a copy of that bootleg. He liked the song but he couldn't make out the words to the verses, so he made up his own verses.

You never have to apologize to the crowd for playing that song. Like Mustang Sally for a dance crowd, the only complaints come from other musicians, but the crowd loves it every single time. And you guys did it well.
