There have been many beautiful tributes to the late Pete Seeger in prose, audio and pictures. This one had me puzzled though. I never knew that there was an 8 string banjo, let alone that Pete played one.

Of course there is an eight string banjo (banjolin), but I've never seen Pete playing one.

I think so too. It's incredible how many otherwise good artists misdraw musical instruments. It's not like things like fiddles, guitars, flutes and banjos are so rare and exotic that the artists can't find examples to model their drawings after. I've seen an amazing number of musical instruments in art works that feature really serious errors of construction of said instruments.
