Dave,
Regarding inputs - what do you have in mind? A recommendation for the best possible set-up - or what?

Dave,
The Radio Special was manufactured late 1926 to early 1928 - less than 200 or so tenor and plectrum examples were built.
I could tell you more interesting stuff about this very special model - but I won´t here at BHO - an ignorant/stupid member is pt. interfering/disturbing the threads here - do instead write me off-line at polle@acoustudio.dk - if you´ll want to learn more about this model.
Regards
Polle

Hi Dave --
Glad you got that! Everything about it looks original, correct, and in great shape. It's a 'odd' banjo -- but a rare one. (I've never even seen one, in person. Just the one in Tsumura's book.) It'll be quite a conversation piece!
The "tulips" (bells, actually... even though everyone refers to it as "the Tulip flange"...) were used on some of the lower-model banjos, including the early Senoritas. It was less expensive to produce than the angled f-hole flange used on the Silver Bells.
The Radio Special has a 'Little Wonder' style tonering, I believe. Just a steel rod with a spun skirt. (I don't believe it has any internal spun wall -- like a later Silver Bell, or a later Super Banjo. But since I've never seen one... I could be wrong.)
Best- Ed Britt

Dave,
Sorry - it seems, that my sometimes poor memory has failed me - I´ve searched my large archive - but I can´t find anything special about this model.
But - do have in mind, that the radio was the scoop of the mid 20s - "broad" castings started in 1920, I think - by 1928 US had three national radio networks.
BTW - your example seems to be in excellent condition - congratulations.

Peter,
Ha-Ha! Got you! You fell into the trap that was set up for you.
Other members had been warned off-line in advance - we were all waiting for you to pop up here, demonstrate your ignorance and bad behavior plus thereby fall into the trap.
I wrote above: I could tell you more interesting stuff about this very special model - but I won´t here at BHO - an ignorant/stupid member is pt. interfering/disturbing the threads here - do instead write me off-line at polle@acoustudio.dk - if you´ll want to learn more about this model.
I do of course know all about the Radio Special model - as I do regarding all other B&D models. Plus as lately demonstrated several times - I´m way ahead of you regarding advanced acoustics, banjo constructions, set-up´s etc.
Peter - you´re the only person to be blamed - all members are aware of this now, I take.
I´m sorry on your behalf - your enthusiasm and fresh ideas could have made you a treasured member - but you turned out being too self-destructive.

Dave,
Do forget about this maybe strange issue - you´re not a part of it!
But - the intruder (as mentioned to you off-line) had to be stopped here and now - please pardon us for using your thread.
BTW - have you got the banjo in question into your hands by now?

Name calling... Traps... Offline warnings... Polle this is not shaping up well for your maturity, credibility and professionalism... Again my fellow member, you are not an authority on internet ethics, not a judge on how anyone should be treated, and acting very negatively... I have no doubt you are ahead of me, given that I'm not trying to get ahead of you...??? This is very strange behavior and I feel you're spending too much time pursuing a grudge... Its very counter productive to you... As obviously stated, people are puzzled why you'd take up a piece, on an otherwise informative thread, with this behaviour. Please refrain... and be a big boy... I know you can do it...
Totally back on track.
Nice banjo I saw this for sale... I used Polle's DB and notice how many proportional units were produced... Congrats on a rare find.

Understood, please rely on Polle as he's your closest point of contact for this banjo. Everything else is needless history.
Would be good for you post inside pics as well as to document its history here at BHO.
All the best

Again correct , but Im not sure about the last part.
My apologies to the OP , but I had to say something. A moderator certainly wont. This is precisely the stuff that keeps people away from this otherwise great forum.

“It is a wise thing to be polite; consequently, it is a stupid thing to be rude. To make enemies by unnecessary and willful incivility, is just as insane a proceeding as to set your house on fire. For politeness is like a counter--an avowedly false coin, with which it is foolish to be stingy.”

LOL. well this thread went straight down the crapper and the dude just wanted to know more about his banjo. I feel for you, man. This was like when my folks was splitting up and I'd go ask my mom how to do long division and it would end with my parents fighting and me still not knowing how to math.

John,
Thanks for the laughter - great comparison.
As for the disturbing postings of mine - do have a look at this thread: banjohangout.org/topic/279955 - and do please forget them.

Dave,
I have put you in as the reference for your banjo in my database. It was manufactured appr. June 1927.
I have seen only a few examples of this model - here are some pics of SN 25010 - manufactured appr. March 1928:
.jpg)
As you can see - the dark painted engravings are somewhat (very) different from those on yours.
As for the green/red colors on the peghead of yours - I can´t recall having seen this on other examples - do these paints look original to you?
Polle
dspainters - Posted - 03/02/2014: 06:34:51
hi polle my banjo does seem to be original did contact the seller he says it is original except the bridge and strings also inside the case i found a letter from 2008 from you ,he contacted you seeking info for this banjo it was listed on your data base of reporter as david holland.the letter states in 2008 that you recorded this as number 4 in your data base. as for the green and red colors the do look original some wear on colors.also has green and red on heal and on the back of the resonator too but it does look original to me also how would you price a banjo that is not a top of the line model that is so rare.. what to do ..it is a banjo you just dont see every day.. thanks ...dave

Dave,
I do recall now an example for sale at eBay back in 2009 - this example was very colorful - only - the paints on this may have been added later - I don´t know. I have sadly not kept the pics of it.
By the way - another "odd" difference between the examples - of the for now 12 examples in my database 4 nos. have beveled resonator flanges with F-holes - as on Silver Bell´s. The other 8 nos. - yours included - have the flat flange with bell shaped holes.
And what´s more "odd" - this is not due to a change in design - the versions are totally mixed.
Indeed a somewhat strange/mysterious and rather rare B&D.
I take, that she´s a splendid performer - do enjoy - LOL!

thank you for your info about my banjo, have not held or played a silver bell yet, but he sound is much richer then my 1921 bacon blue ribbon orchestra, the harmonics are awesome ring. i will put a sound bite of the radio special on my thread soon .how ever my next banjo is going to be a silver bell maybe you could tell me what year silver bell would be the best sounding of all the years i am thinking of going to look for a possible 1927 5 string plectrum.. just a thought...thanks again dave
