I'm starting to regret selling my Goodtime 2 resonator.  Wanting something new and thinking that I wanted an openback, I bought a 12" Pisgah Dobson, a great banjo just that I'm starting to think that it's not my style.  I've toyed with ideas like changing the renn. head, or tailpiece, or finding the right bridge, but I'm beginning to doubt that any of those changes will give me what I want.  I don't know,...  Maybe instead of messing with it I'll just put it up for sale again and buy a resonator for around the same price.  Banjos always sound so much better online when other people are playing them, but something much different when you play them yourself.  Did you ever have any similar regrets?

Getting rid of the Goodtime was a good idea, now you can pick up a much nicer one than that. by the way what is a renn? Joe

At any rate I think you'll have a hard time getting the sound you like out of a Dobson. To me, they have a certain sound and are not as tweakable as other banjos are.

Lesson learned. You never, ever, ever under any circumstance sell your first Goodtime!

Wait wait wait....Do you miss the banjo, itself, or the playing style??

(I assume that you were three-fingering a resonator banjo, and you went clawhammer for the openback)

Why don't you go to a store (or stores) and try a variety of instruments? Tom's River looks like a short(-ish) jog to Mandolin Brothers in Staten Island. You may not find a banjo to buy but from the great variety to try you'll have a better idea of what your next step can be. Best of luck --
