I saw leroy troy playing banjo on tv show "the marty Stuart show.I wondered what style he used,it seemed thumb and first finger then similiar to claw hammer down strkes with picks on,(hard to see)I wondered if he ha a special finger pick that covered front and back of finger over fingernail for his style.

LeRoy usually does a basic frailing mbt with occasional drop thumbs. He also fingerpicks.

Leroy, much like Uncle Dave Macon, can and does play all styles. When he does "The Old Grey Mare" he flat pick strums like a plectrum banjoist. He strums also with a thumb pick, like a guitar player. He plays two finger with picks, and he is very capable of 3 finger with picks bluegrass playing (although he rarely does). He is of course an expert clawhammer player too. I wouldn't be surprised if he can play "all fingers" without picks, like Uncle Dave used to do on some of his records.
Stringbean also played 2 finger with picks, throughout his career, in addition to clawhammer. Same for Bashful Brother Oswald.
Leroy changes banjo styles with no discussion or "announcement". If you watch close, during the course of his show you'll see him slip thumb/finger picks off and on in a trice, with no big deal made about it.
