T'was her wedding present. :)
It's an early Bart Reiter (muilti-"f" hole) internal resonator with Bart's 2-tone ring construction (tubaphone with an additional flange-like ring on top). She talks some about it (and plays) in her Old-time Performer interview here: banjohangout.org/lessons/oldti...sp?id=298
Laura is a sweetheart. Great player, beautiful voice. She tells some great John Hartford stories, too.

Wow, I thought Bart's internal resonator models were largely brass hoop ring Bacon Professionals....this tubaphone arrangement has a wonderful sound, doesn't it . . .

It's kind of a tu-ba-phone/bacon combination. I've seen her playing another banjo on recent YouTube videos, but that's the banjo she was playing when I took lessons with her (1991?) at the Swannanoa Gathering. Laura--or as her students referred to her, "Banjo Goddess"--is one of the finest players I've known. (Her rendition of "Richmond Cotillion" is breath-taking.) And she is the most empathetic, user-friendly banjo instructor you'll ever find. (I'm surprised Homespun or someone hasn't asked her to do an intro video.) And in less than half an hour, she can have you singing shape-note like you grew up with it. Anyway, back on topic, if Bart Reiter never made another banjo, Laura's would justify his efforts.
