Howdy,



I'm curious about opinions on whether I would be better off with thick or thin skin heads on 13 and 14 in orpheum pots with 5 string necks. Specifically in regards to stability and getting tight with minimal sag across  the large rim. But of course I'm curious about opinions on tone difference as well

A thicker head would be easier to keep tight, but these were designed to be very bright and piercing with gut strings and thin heads.

One thing to consider is the fit of the old hardware.  Sometimes old hardware can be tight fitting and/or out-of-round.  Either condition can make it difficult to install hides that are too thick. I recommend you inspect the clearance between the tension hoop and rim before deciding on a hide.



I mounted a 13" head on an old spunover rim this week.  The tension hoop was out-of-round making the fit tight in a couple of spots.  The hide I selected was approx ..012-.013 in thick.
