I've used Lowes wood stain in the past to color skin heads. Tonight I experimented with layering a couple of colors of StewMac's Colortone stain to color a medium goat skin. I used vintage amber and then added medium brown over the amber. Both were diluted with alcohol from previous neck staining activities. Opinions may very, but results are below. With the variety of colors available with this product, seems that you could make any color head you desire.

I'll post more pictures when the banjo is finished, hopefully sometime this summer. But here is a couple of pictures of it mounted on an unfinished rim. I'll add danish oil and renaissance wax later.
