I noted on the Romero Banjo Instagram account that Jason commented that he applies danish oil and wax after he installs hide heads. I can't find any other reference to this practice in the BHO archives or the internet. Does anyone have any positive/negative experience with this? I'm considering doing this on my current project and would love to hear others' experience or recommendations.
One might assume this is similar to applying a water-proofing agent to the skin, about which there are a range of opinions.

I don't have personal experience, but I stumbled a couple of days ago on the Johannes Bonefaas video, youtube.com/watch?v=oxPKRVhgUK8 discussion that includes waxing at 6:24 and is also mentioned in an old BHO thread ( banjohangout.org/archive/300010 ). I'm sure there are other threads as well.

Oil-based wood finish can be applied. It may protect and help with moisture resistance. But I think the main benefit of a finish like that is to enhance the appearance and color of stained heads.
After finishing, you can spray with waterproofer if desired. This too may have some impact on moisture resistance. But finishes & waterproofers will NOT completely eliminate fluctuation due to humidity.
As a last step, I apply Reniassance Wax as a protectant. It is clear and totally invisible. Wax is beneficial on unstained & unfinished heads too. I usually apply it on all hide heads. It has no impact on tone or performance.

Thank you both for your responses. I have a J Balch head that I stained and I'm interested in seeing what appearance difference the the Danish oil will make. I have Reniassance wax on hand, so I'll also apply that.
