Keith bought himself a D45 right soon after he went full time with Ralph. It's not Carter's.  (Carter's wasn't a D45 anyway, it was a dressed up D28, in those days they called that a "Snow Job" after Hank Snow having done the same thing to his.)  It was a new one. I saw that band live many times. I just watched this video via a link a friend sent me. Outstanding historical record, and some mighty fine music. Ralph was really wielding that banjer on Shout Luly! Imagine, this GIANT of bluegrass playing for a store opening, on a flatbed truck... humbling...



At least now I know Cookie wasn't really the ex-Mayor of Norton VA.

PS: Dick B. - I haven't been able to find it again, but I'm sure I found a list of Norton Mayor's online which included a Jack Cooke... All I can find now is 2nd hand references to 'the' Jack Cooke serving half a term as mayor in 1963... but it's an interesting comment from Ralph!

Ralph's got two capos on there. I'm thinking, huh? Then I Googled that and there's a discussion here on the Hangout about it. Probably he did this for quick key changes. Is that right? Never saw anybody do this before.

Laura, Ralph used one capo just when he wanted it at the 5th fret, leaving the other narrower capo on the banjo at A, B or C, because he'd probably want to go back to such a key after the number in C. I don't know where/when he developed that habit, but I've seen him do it for years and years.

And, regarding Keith's guitar, it may very well be a D41 instead of 45, Martin had just brought them out. I never thought to count inlays.
