I was browsing through the hang out as I often do and saw the collectors corner and thought I’d take a look... when to my surprise I saw a description of an old banjo that someone needed help identifying. As it was being described I realized that it was my banjo that I had purchased of of EBay back in April! That motivated me to finally join the hang out! The post was from back in January 2018 describing an old banjo with 1893 WC etched into the home made tail piece. It also had a neck brace made from an old spoon or fork! I really enjoyed reading all the comments and questions about it. Well the person that had it never did anything with it but take the metal strings off of it and then sell it to me. It was my first attempt to make one of these old banjos playable. I took it all apart, cleaned it all up (discovering that the tail piece was made from an old “good for 5 cents or trade token” and the neck brace was made from a late 1800’s Wallace Brothers of Wallingford spoon or fork), replaced to old head, pulled off the horrible 14 frets that someone in the past had crookedly put on and I returned it to its original fretlessness, put Nygut strings on it and have since thoroughly enjoyed learning how to play fretless! I have since then picked up 2 more and have restored them. They are a lot of fun to pick around on.
