The only time I met Bart - face-to-face - was at the Tennessee Banjo Institute. I can't remember for sure - but might have been 1988.
He had on display a fully engraved & carved Bacon-style banjo that was the most beautiful instrument I had ever seen. I became a life-long devotee right then and there. I bought my first Bart Reiter banjo a couple of years later from Elderly Instruments.
I feel blessed to own several examples of his custom work from that period. My old banjos have been very well-loved and played hard. They have earned an awesome natural "patina". I LOVE the well-used look of them, Despite the wear, the beauty of Bart's skilled work is still obvious.
One of my life goals is to leave behind a few completely worn-out Reiter banjos. I'm working on it every day!

Oh that looks nice. I'd be lusting after it big time except that a) I no longer play and b) I have a "Reiter-Phone" of my own.
I've been told this was one of a dozed he did in the early 1990s. I, too, acquired it from Gryphon in 1995. It has its original plectrum dowel stick and case. Man, I have to get better pictures online. This thing is frickin' gorgeous.
