Rolling backup. Full or partial chord shapes. Maybe de-emphasize or avoid the major third. Not lick heavy. You're creating a bed, not calling attention to yourself. So nothing that sounds like a banjo solo or attempts to play melody.
Picking pattern is whatever you're comfortable with and sounds good to you.
