The 1963 “folk anthem” from his “Freewheelin’” album. Arranged for banjo players in their first few years of playing.

Nice, easy, version of this for any beginner to grasp. More fun and more relatable than so many of the older tunes typically used for this level.

One comment, however: There are three lines per verse before the C chord "The answer" refrain. You've tabbed it as only two. The third line ends like the first, so I think you can simply change the ending 1 to read "1 & 3."

First verse lyrics:

How many roads must a man walk down
Before you call him a man?

How many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand?

Yes, and how many times must the cannonballs fly
Before they're forever banned?

The answer, my friend . . .

Old Hickory Ah, so right you are, I jumped over the third line. Ah well, it’s a banjo break that can be altered, like you mention. Peter, Paul, and Mary used more minor chord insertions ,, I used just the one,, they also, if I remember right, put in a 5 chord at the end of vocal line 2 ,, Dylan stayed on the 1. A mix & match for those who’d like to tinker…

Yeah. I guess it's not as simple a fix as I said. No problem.  On D shape you show can work for that. And people can play around and make the 2-finger D7 on 3rd and 3nd strings also work. Most of each line is the same.

Some extra "homework" for banjo students - unintended, :-).

Chuck,
It's really your arrangement and if people have a problem, they should try it their way...Jack

Ear training. You've given learners all but a few measures.

And the first line does work for the third line because the note being emphasized in the roll is D - on the top two strings. If someone has enough ear they can hear how to use a D7 and hit a C note just below the D.

You're doing a great service recording these easy arrangements and providing tab.

Thanks, Jack,, but I did "mis-remember" how the song lyrics went. Anyway, I think that anyone familiar with the song can make the necessary adjustments.

Thanks, Ken. Although it's not totally altruistic - I get a kick out of making these basic arrangements , and it also boosts my YouTube algorithm action.

Hmm, it's been 10 years since I first got an account so I can't remember,, it's gotta be pretty easy. I'd ask google, Jack.  I think you just get the app from the App Store and go from there.

PP and M went to the relative minor in the chorus at the word “wind” ie., the E minor in the key of G before going to the 4 chord (C in the key of G) and most people play it that way. But Dylan went right to the 4 chord at that point, never using the minor chord in the song.

Thanks Chuck,

I figured it out on my own. I've got three or more pieces on there right now. I already had a page on You Tube and forgot...Thanks Chuck...Jack

Jack Baker You could mention your zoom lessons on your YouTube videos, if you wanted to.
I post my videos all over the various Facebook groups - there are hundreds of them for bluegrass, banjo, folk, acoustic guitar, fingerpicking, etc. That’s mainly how my YouTube channel grows; also from TikTok, Reddit, and instagram.
