BG Banjo - Posted - 03/07/2026:  11:28:35

I have gotten to the point that I have accumulated enough banjos that when I go down just to play banjo, or when I go to jam with my buddies, or when I have some less that prime time gig at a senior center, I have to make a conscious decision which one to play, and I'm not one who likes to weigh the options and make that decision. I would get rid of one or two, but same problem, I can't make up my mind which to say adios to. Decisions, decisions, decesions, I know, first world problem.

Do you have a newer Stelling to sell?

No, and if I did, I would have to decide if I wanted to sell it or not.

Go old school... the tried and true "coin-toss"

I always like the idea of upgrading the collection. Therefore, sell the least valuable first?

Since I started this thread I've been thinking of putting one or two out in the storage rental. Out of sight, out of mind. I don't need the money, if I sell them I lose money, and they would be there if I decided I wanted one of them. I think that might be the ticket. I don't know,, like I said, first world problems. ;)

For some, apparently having them out on stands can be a pretty good/reliable way to do a bit of "sorting out."  cheeky

Not for me, it makes it worse. That was the problem in the first place, four banjos lined up and messing with one when I should be playing another. I have two that I spend more time piddling with than playing them. I took them to the rental storage this morning, a cheaper open back that I might want someday and the one my band mate gave me a week or two ago. I kept back a 12" open back and a resonator banjo to play. My brain feels less crowded now. I'm glad I talked about it. Sometimes just talking solves the problem.

If making a decision is the problem, then the simple and easiest solution is to not make a decision.  So, you keep all the banjos, because no matter what path leads to parting with a banjo, there is a decision to make.  (And putting some into rental "storage" ain't much different from putting some into a closet, except for the cost.)

You pass down to your heirs the decision of which banjos to put in the final estate sale.  If you were there, the decision might be "none."  Their decision might be "all."  smiley

I only have 3 banjos, but still have this disease bad. So… to cure this disease, I imagine what banjo I would keep, if I could only keep one, and then play that one. The only problem to this logic, is that the banjo I would keep, changes with my mood, the weather, and my aching back… so I remain hopeless and undecided.

Count yer blessings Dean .... most of my imagining is imagining that I can play a banjo. wink

If you are referring to me, I am married. I don't know how things are with you, but my wife has no idea what I have and don't have. She has her own things going on to occupy her time. It's all me. But I will admit that I get stressed with a lot of clutter. Sometimes that is a good thing, sometimes not so much.

Not particularly referring to u ---- it was meant to be sort of a joke .

At 87 I'm very lucky to have a forgiving wife with whom I share just about everything --- she just recently let me spend 17 k on a street rod  wink

What didja get, Bob?  I hope it's one with the wheels more-or-less aligned.*

Good health and good wife ..... can life get any better?  I think it's pretty common advice that husband/wife not work together.   We enjoyed our years of teaching our separate subject areas but the best was team-teaching K/JK on a fly-in reserve.

* also sort of a joke.  wink

Each banjo has its own personality. Like an arch top for a Ralph Stanley sound or whatever. You should keep the one that kind of does it all. The longer you play the same instrument the more you discover what it can do. Or can’t do.

There's no reason to coin toss. Put one in each tuning you play in. My wife needs different shoes for every possible occasion, so I need a banjo in every possible tuning I may play in.

I only play  in one tuning. Anyway, the two in the storage shed haven't been missed and we have harmony  again. I think getting two unexpected banjos in the span of two weeks was the thing. I know this all seems pretty silly, but it isn't to me. I mean, it isn't anything that is going to drive me over the edge of sanity, but it does get in the way of enjoying the banjo playing experience. Problem taken care of. I've moved on.
