I've been reading Doc Watson's biography and it tells about his father making him a banjo. He first tried the hide from a groundhog, but found it was too thick. They had an old cat that was on its last legs so they dispatched the cat, tanned the hide, and made a banjo head out of it. I guess that one worked pretty well from what I read. Now that right there is mountain ingenuity!!! Great book, by the way. I'm just part way through it, but it's pretty amazing what he accomplished. Loss of sight didn't slow him down much...

the only thing i have in common with doc watson (other then the most respect possible for a musician ) is both of our first guitars were stella acoustic  for 12 dollars,,, i think my dad gave 30 bucks for mine in the mid 60s.

My Dad gave me a small Stella guitar about 65 or 70 years ago, and I have racked what little brain I have and don't have a clue what happened to it. Wish I still had it!!
