As Tim Davis announced a few years ago:
"So, so excited to be working with Butch Robins to recreate his famous RB4. We feel like this replica will be the closest banjo anyone's ever been able to create in modern banjo building.
We're taking exact measurements of the banjo and are now in the process of having a CAD drawing made to replicate the neck to perfection.
Butch has graciously allowed us to disassemble the banjo and measure the tone ring, to not only get the weight and the measurements, but also the perfect formula to recreate the tone of this famous banjo.
To cap everything off, we're going to torrefy the neck and the 3-ply maple rim and use hot hide glue in its construction and chrome plate everything. It's still going to be a few months but we are looking forward to this a great project to add to our Legends Series, along with Don Reno's Nellie.
Structural & Wood Specs. Torrefied Neck: Made of premium French Walnut that has undergone torrefaction (heat-aging) to mimic the dryness, stability, and acoustic response of 90-year-old pre-war wood. Neck Profile: Custom-shaped using high-precision CAD mapping to replicate the exact slim, ergonomic feel of Robins’ original 1930 neck profile. Torrefied Wood Rim: A premium 3-ply maple rim that is also torrefied to maximize natural resonance and vintage punch. Hardware & Tone Formulation Custom Tone Ring Formula: Tim Davis analyzed the exact weight, metallurgical composition, and dimensions of the original Gibson ring to pour a custom-alloy replica tone ring. Flange Configuration: Built as a classic one-piece flange bluegrass banjo using standard 11-inch rim dimensions. Aesthetics: Complete with historical replica inlay patterns on the fingerboard and peghead, perfectly matching the original pre-war Gibson RB-4 cosmetic styling.
