1930 Gibson TB-1 conversion banjo / the specifications:
I purchased this banjo in late 2009, as an all-original opf TB-1. It has all it’s original parts including: matching numbered rim & single-bound resonator (9540-12), purple felt-lined hard case, tenor neck w/ coke-bottle peghead & 2-tab Grover tuning pegs, all original metal including repairable “1st model" Grover tailpiece & 7/16”X1/4” wrench.
The conversion transpired as follows: Martin Welding, of Ohio, did a masterful repair of a hairline crack in the tension hoop…fortunately that’s hidden under the arm-rest & very stable. Added a pre-war single-leg arm-rest & a punched pre-war Grover Presto tailpiece. Huber Banjos cut the rim for a long-skirt Flathead tone-ring & added a second steel coordinator rod. They also built a really nice mahogany style-3 neck w/ dbl-cut peghead, rosewood board, & their signature pre-war “pip”. The original plastic truss-rod cover & screws are on the new Huber neck. We added Wavery two-band tuners & I installed old grained ivoroid buttons. In late 2010, I purchased a new set of Burlile “Pittman-style” cam-tuners…had them installed in 2011. They needed “tweaking” and machinist Jerry Keys improved them. In early 2013, I installed a long-skirt Jerry Sloan JBS tone-ring, which I feel improved the banjo. Wonderful response, tone, power & punch. It’s a very “open” tone-full banjo that will deliver “the goods” in any setting. Plays “like butter”! Comes w/ a like-new Superior fiberglass case. Huber strap not included.
Btw, over the past 80+ years, many of these original pre-war pot-metal tension-hoops have a tendency to “flair-out” a bit at the top…you often see the brackets bowing slightly & pulled away from the T-hoop…not this hoop or brackets.
Please look over the many photos and ask any questions you may have. Thanks, Brian
