With the SpikeTyke drill jig, precision in drilling holes for 5th string spikes is no longer left to chance. You get a perpendicular hole, the correct position with respect to the string, with a consistent distance of about 9 mm (3/8") from the next fret up.
- V.2024 is SOLD OUT.
- V.2024 factory seconds in 7075 aluminum; Kit $35. These are cosmetically subpar but fully functional jigs.
- V.2026 in 7075 aluminum coming up shortly.
All jigs available now and later are for both RIGHT- and LEFT-handed banjos, both INWARD and OUTWARD spikes, and both FLAT and RADIUSED fretboards.
A SpikeTyke kit contains the jig, 2 drill bits (0.75 mm and 0.8 mm), 8 spikes, a 0.3 mm feeler gauge, and instructions. Each kit can be extended by adding 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, or 12 spikes at $1 a pair.
SPIKES as main order: 2–20 spikes are available in pairs. Several internet shops sell these Micro Engineering medium-size railroad spikes in bags of 800 for about 2¢ a piece, but while Deering, Banjo Ben and others sell them out of the bag at a 2,000% price increase, mine—while coming at a comparable price—are trimmed to about 6 mm to prevent perforation of the neck, and, more importantly, I flatten their heads to about 0.35 mm (0.015") so they don't interfere with fretting the string. The spikes are blackened. Of course, all of that involves some manual work. See photo of Micro Engineering spike before / after.
