Cripple Creek - I Wish

From RB4picker on 8/21/2011 10:31:48 AM

Hey all, my name is David, I'm 57 years old, live in N. Alabama, been playing Scruggs style about 5 weeks now. Started out first couple weeks with right hand rolls etc. and now am learning "Bile Dem Cabbage Down" and "Banjo in the Hollow". I have a Gibson Epiphone and a great instructor. I am enjoying myself so far. Cripple creek at a decent speed would be great right now. I think it will come with patience and lots of practice. I try to get in an hour a day or more. How about you guys? What do you play and how do you practice?

CreekRunner,
Welcome to group, My name is Larry, I am 64 years old, I have a Washburn banjo and have been playing for about two years off and on. I started out learning rolls and tab but found that I wasn't getting the excitement of playing so I started learning by ear. Now I do some of both and getting more fun out of the "old JO". My practice time is in direct perportion to my hony-do- list (ha,ha). Most important thing to learn about the banjo is HAVE FUN.

Hello Larry, nice to meet you. I know what you mean by the honey do list. My list keeps getting longer and I keep getting slower. But I do make time to pick and grin.

I started playing about two weeks ago and have been practicing about 2-3 hrs a day, longer in my days off. I love the sound of the banjo, but I can't play for very well. My wife and kids want me to play songs and all I can do is tell them in time I will rock this house!

Just about two weeks in and learning the rolls. Kind of thought I was doing ok but tried to record myself. Couldn't manage to get through it very well at all. Lots of practice and patience. I really love the Banjo though! I practice at least an hour a day and often much more. Just takes time. I would like to start using a metronome as well.

Welcome somarmd! Feels good gettin' them rolls down don't it? When you feel comfortable with your recording (or anytime) post it on BHO and lets hear your progress.
