First instrument

From Schooner Fred on 2/26/2012 8:31:41 AM

Been playing a whole week - first time for anything.  XXL hands are not real helpful.  It is said of sailors that "every finger a marlinspike ".  Mine are fat marlinspikes.

i havent been playing long either and finding it hard to make chords, i'm a little over a month and a half into playing any instrument, as the calluses develop on the tips of your fingers the easier i find it to make chords, if you dont have the calluses (i dont have good ones yet) the tips of your finger flatten out and causes muting and buzzing on the strings above and below, as they develop it gets better....good luck and have fun with it.

Fred,
I recently started banjo. Because I am a guitar player I thought learning banjo would be easy but the banjo's neck sure is skinny. Makes my fingers feel like fat sausages.

I tried the mandolin (strings too close) and the guitar (strings 4/16"apart at the nut) and found it difficult to make chords (I would mute strings that should not have been muted). To my surprise, I am finding it a bit easier to use some of the beginning/easy chords on the banjo. The strings on my Gold Tone CC-OT are 5/16" apart at the nut, which seems to give me that little bit of extra room betwen strings I needed. Still need to work on my technique to make the chords cleanly more consistently, but I am encouraged.
