Let's get this group going!

From Deb D on 8/28/2012 8:43:05 PM

I've been playing since last Christmas, so still consider myself an absolute beginner.  However, anytime I check out this group, it looks pretty dead.  Anybody interested in getting it going again?  I've found the rest of the hangout crowd to be quite hospitable, but take comfort in knowing others around here are novices, as well.

Anybody else working through the JANET DAVIS YOU CAN TEACH YOURSELF TO PLAY THE BANJO book?  I'm up to Wabash Cannonball, and am very disappointed that a slow version of each tune is no longer included on the cd.  She plays so quickly I can't even follow the tab, let alone play along.

What else are you working on?  I've learned a few other tunes via Ross Nickerson books/cd's/dvd's and am very pleased with his tabs and teaching style.

I could blather on, but am more interested in what my fellow beginners are up to!

I am half way through Jack Hatfields book. Changing direction for a while, will be taking Pete Wernick Bluegrass Jam Class for beginners for 8 weeks . Looking forward to improving my cord changes , timing and learning backup as well as playing with some other beginners like myself. Should be fun.

Hi, I have been working with the Murphy Method. It's been a great way to learn! It works well for me. I can read tab but it's very slow as a beginner.

I have enjoyed it so much I just purchased a mandolin and have learned my first song.....again Murphy Method.

Happy picking everyone!

Been playing a little over a year now. I have the Janet Davis book but haven't really used it as I am using an instructor. However, looking thru the book today, I figure I'm about half way thru I guess.
Goog Luck!
David

@prariemk, is Pete Wernick Bluegrass Jam Class for beginners an on-line class?
@somarmd, I've been thinking about checking out the Murphy method, even though tab reading isn't a problem. Is learning the banjo and the mandolin at the same time confusing? I, too, am thinking of getting a mandolin for my teen age son to play. He loves hanging around while I'm practicing, so figure he could use the time to practice as well!

@R, you will love the banjo!

@Creek - wish I could locate a "live" instructor around here, that's the best way!

Deb, a teacher is so valuable to have they can see things that you are doing that you may never notice. I have just not been on here lately because of work and practive and jamming. Sort of got all caught up in the moment of jamming that I have left no time for the board.

Deb, no you meet with other beginning bluegrass folks. Go to Pete Wernicks site and look for a class in your area.

I bought some books and DVD's yesterday and a banjo today.... I'm ready to learn and looks like a good place with info that I've already found helpful...
