HI, I want to get myself an electronic tuner until I hopefully learn to tune by ear, any recommendations? I've been having a look at the Snark, good reviews and affordable?!

If you have a smart phone, there's an app called gstrings which will work as a tuner for anything.. Otherwise, I have 3 little clip-on tuners I got on ebay for around 7 dollars each.. I like the cheap ones because they don't "walk off" at jams and they're cheap to replace even if they do..

Thing about the clip-on tuners, though, is that most of them can be set to just sense the vibrations of your instrument rather than using a mike.. This is very useful if there's lots of background noise or if other people are also tuning or playing instruments near you..

Good advice, thanks. I've tried the app and the banjo sounds great, so cheers for that tip, I can now crack on and try to speed up a little!! As an incentive I'm aiming to learn Blackberry Blossom and Boil them cabbage down, they look like good beginner tunes?!

I think they're recommended for beginners but I haven't tried either of them.. I'm doing kind of a modified clawhammer that I made up.. I do OLD JOE CLARK and CORN BREAD AND BUTTERBEANS and RED RIVER VALLEY and WILDWOOD FLOWER and a couple more..
(Trying to learn to play the songs my dad used to sing while he pitched manure in the barn)
I'm not FLAWLESS with any of them but I'm slowly getting better.. I built myself a couple fretless rigs with nylon strings-- makes practicing a whole lot easier on old fingers..

Sounds fantastic, would like to see that sometime? Having just started out I feel I've dipped a toe in the sea of banjo........and I'm looking forward to getting in upto my neck!!

You are right about the advantage of the headstock tuner not catching ambient noise from other people, birds, trucks, etc. But you can try the free versions of Panotuner and Tune Up. I like both but the Tune up is crazy accurate and easy to use. I had a small mic I put in the back of the banjo and hooked up to the iPhone. I am not sure it was as good as the iPhone mic, however. Besides, when I start playing most everything gets up and leaves so there is not much ambient noise to bother me. And get a metronome too!

Excellent, thanks, can you recommend a good metronome app as the stuff I've seen isn't great? will have a look at the tune up app but I must say the gstrings was great!!
