Just joined the group thought I'd Intro myself, i'm Larry Cushman, 65 from Ofallon Mo.When you see my avitar on a thread don't go by the stars under it, I've been here a while can tear em down & put em back together, do some set-up, refret all that stuff but can't play a lick, wife says it's time to learn. I signed up for a beginner CH lessons supposed to start next week but no one else has so it will more then likely be cancelled again. I've go more beginner books and DVD's then anyone person should have but I just don't get much out of them, I need someone telling me what I'm doing wrong. Hopefully we can encourage each other and someday move on to a players group. Larry

I watched some beginner stuff on youTube and could hardly put the banjo down after that. Then I got some DVDs and practiced a lot. I don't sound like some of the experts but have developed my own style somewhat and enjoy playing for myself. At my age I don't plan on going "pro" so I am happy with the music I make. I found when you record what you are doing it sounds different than when you play it (better). Don't give up, all of a sudden it clicks and you are really playing. Read BHO forums and you will get inspiration and direction. It helps a LOT. Good luck on your journey and let us know how it's going. -Karen
lg9455 says: 2/26/2011 5:21:21 PM Hi Larry, I,m a Larry too and 64. I have had a banjo for several years and took lessons for a few months and I learned parts of a couple of songs. The instructor quit giving lessons(not because of me I hope) so I started with the books and tab, then found that I was having the same problem you are having. nothing I play on my own sounds like I expect them to. I have gotten a good deal of encouragement from the folks here and some great ideas. Just keep working at it and don,t be embaraced to ask a question. somebody here has been there and done it before you.
