Hey folks,

I've started listening to Allen Shelton on the advice of my teacher. Got a Jim and Jesse album and a couple of his solo albums. Totally loving his style and arrangements. Really love his mando player, too! I hear him as a more lyrical style of Scruggs picking with a little more bop and swing. Just wondering who is out there today that is close or similar to Allen Shelton?

darylearl says: 4/2/2014 12:52:28 PM Hi Cliff. Glad you're getting your Shelton indoctrination! "Who is most like Allen?" is a tough question to answer. His style is so unique. Lots of players use his signature licks on a regular basis and most pickers try to "play it like Allen" when doing a Shelton number but I really don't know a modern player whose style is close. Maybe some of the more experienced members of the group can give a better response. Daryl

	Jacob Underwood says: 4/6/2014 8:42:25 PM Mike Scott plays a lot like Allen Shelton; I would say that he is the closest of anyone I've ever heard. He spent several years playing with Jim & Jesse, and now he plays with Ronnie Reno & the Reno Tradition. I would highly recommend checking out some of his playing. He has made several really good instrumental albums.
darylearl says: 4/8/2014 9:12:44 AM Jim and Jesse were regular performers at the Peaceful Valley Festival in Shinhopple NY. One year (during the later 80's) their line up included both Mike Scott on banjo and Allen Shelton on 5 string dobro. That was some great picking.
