Harmony H5845

From darkseid on 1/21/2015 8:06:46 PM

My wife got me a Harmony H5845 for Christmas. Any tips on improving the sound and playability of this model?

That's a typical Asian (Japanese or Korean) "bottlecap" banjo. If you'll search the hangout for "bottlecap" or "bottle cap", you will find numerous threads on how to get the most out of one of these infernal machines. For a bridge that suits this model well, check with Don New (Stringbean45) here on the Hangout.

I put a wooden "tone ring " inside my Bottlecap see WaldoTone Rim: banjohangout.org/blog/22719

I put some foam rubber in the resonator on my old Hondo and that made an improvement.

Are these wooden tone rings sold?

On the ones that I modified, I used old junk banjo rims. Not sure what Bob (Klondike Waldo) used. Virtually anything wooden, inside and making contact with the aluminum rim will help. Best approach is to experiment and see what works. Like I said earlier there are hundreds of archived thread on this forum that you can use for information. There's no reason to have to type all this stuff over again. Lots of photos on my home page, as well.

I used the cut-off section from a three-ply rim someone added a a bronze tone ring to Pictures are in my blog as lonked above. There must be lots of cut-offs around from people adding after-market tone rings to wodd-rimmed banjos.
