Extraneous noise...

From brewerpaul on 6/9/2015 5:22:45 PM

Hi all-- I posted a thread with the above name on the Tenor/Plectrum forum.  Take a peek and see if you have anything to add.  Thanks in advance.

It's sort of hard to understand what "percussive sounds" you are wanting to reproduce on your aluminum rim. That would help to understand the issue for us AR Outcasts a little better.

I have two things to add: 1) It's heresy to try to explain this to folks with a bias against aluminum rims and bottlecaps, BUT -- sound is just more easily produced from metal rims ... much more than wood. This means that the very first thing you have to do is learn how to play them. Aluminum rim aficionados will verify that techniques are subtly different with metal rims and you have to adjust. (Start by observing the difference the heel of your hand or your forearm against the head can have toward controlling the sound you want.) Most people just choose to blame the rim instead and thus you get the complaints you got in your thread about "cheap" and about overtones. As far as sound alone goes, it's a little like driving a VW and then somebody loans you a Ferrari. The difference in power can throw you. Practice.

2) If you decide you absolutely positively have to mute your aluminum rim, several of the techniques suggested in your thread are feasible. (Search on BHO archives for XNAVYGUY posts about liners.) I have found the most effective method is also one of the least expensive: Fold a dish towel and put it between the co-rod and the head.

I put some foam rubber in the resonator of my old Hondo and that definitely helped it.
