Can anyone enlighten me

From Bryanmac on 10/18/2016 4:02:34 PM

Just joined group. My banjo is a Joelle 5 string with resonator. Anyone know anything about these?

Your best bet would be to post a thread on the Collector's Corner forum, with pictures. But welcome to the group from a fellow Outcast.

Hello, Bryan, I googled "Joelle five string banjo" and found one image which suggests you are the proud owner of a "bottlecap." The photo showed more of the neck than the rim, but the gold-embossed name on the peghead and guitar style tuners mean you have a perfectly usable entry-level Asian import instrument. The name is a label used by the importing distributor. Find someone who can set it up properly and you'll have a good starter instrument.

Thankyou for taking trouble to reply. Bought new in Edinburgh in mid 90s, I thought it was a bottlecap. It's labelled Made in Korea No BJ535. Didn't play it too much then as I found action to high so it's hung on wall till 6 months ago I took it down, found how to adjust action, fitted wooden tapestry rings inside and a piezzo pickup. Shub was fitted when nearly new.
Now practicing seriously and have posted a few pics.

Also fitted new heavier bridge, which, as a fiddler and accustomed to fitting bridges to curved surfaces, I sweetened long before a cetain manufacturere started publicising the idea.

The wooden tapestry rings are a good idea, Bryan. I used the cut-off piece left over from someone's tone ring conversion in mine, so I effectively have a 3 ply maple tone ring inside an aluminum rim. Welcome to the wonderful world of bottlecap banjos.

Have now fitted a heavy "Straight through" tailpiece which sounds and feels much better

..and have now replaced friction 5th peg with a geared one. Wish I'd done it years ago.
