Who Here Knew Andy?

From revellfa on 4/23/2014 3:22:10 PM

I'll start.  I knew Mr. Boarman well.  He lived about 20 miles from me and I always heard of his famed, "Dixie Grand" banjos growing up.

Mr. Boarman died when I was about 20 years old.  He was quite a unique character.

So, anybody got an Andy story?

I got an banjo off of an old feller back when I was working in west virginia back in 1978 or 1979, i was about 18 fixing to turn 19. I was at a store and seen an album and the store clerk told me this feller lives right down the road and makes banjos. It's been quite a long time ago so my memory is kind of fague. I can't remember details, i just remember and peach or apple grove, kind of new to me since i was a florida boy only used to orange groves, first time out of florida as a young man. I got in touch with the old feller, still not sure if we are talking about Andy or not, so maybe someone can confirm or not. I still have the banjo, i didn't get a case for it so it so the resonator binding kind of came off a little bit. I still play the banjo to this day on lunch time at work. i always wondered how i could find out who the old feller was and this is what i came across in my research, so I could be wrong. The banjo has a star inlay on the peghead, looks like mahoney wood, he gave it to me unfinished. I just remember when i went to pick it up, he played a banjo that he had and i was amazed how it ringed. Nicest ole feller you can meet. it was signed in the inside of the resonator, i could make out hedysville wv, he signed his name but it has faded, but if i remeber correctly it started with Andrew, look like it was written with a pencil. i am going to look at it Monday morning and see if i can make out andrew name on it now that i know what i am looking for. if anyone can help me , let me know, appreciate it.

Well if it was a nice old fella it might nota been Andy as he could get a little grouchy! Lol. It was likely Andy that you encountered. He lived in Hedgesville, WV. and was still making banjos during that period of time. He signed the banjos "Andrew F. Boarman." Do you have any pics?
