Greetings from Sydney

From Mark_K on 7/30/2013 5:03:07 AM

Having played guitar for over forty years, I decided to try my hand at the banjo, so I recently bought an Epiphone MB-200, which wasn't easy to come by.

I know it's not the fanciest banjo around (no tone ring, for example), but it's supposed to be suitable for beginners at a reasonable price and I'm having lots of fun.

Although I've played finger-style guitar for many years, adapting to the banjo hasn't been as easy as I thought, mainly due to the finger picks, which I've never used before.  I'm getting the hang of it though.  I managed to track down some Pro-Piks, which are great.

I bought the banjo at Allans in Sydney, who gave me a good price, but the setup could have been better.  I'll take it to Guitar Factory at Gladesville.  Those guys really know banjos.  I just couldn't justify the price of one of their high-end instruments.

Keep on pickin'.

Regards,

Mark

Welcome. I hope you get as much enjoyment out of learning as I have been. My main instrument now is a Goodtime Classic (no tone ring) and I am very happy learning with that.
Cheers, Paul

Hi Mark,
I live in Bendigo Victoria and have also been a guitarplayer for 40 years. I took up the banjo 12 month ago and am addicted. I also fingerpick on guitar but it is a whole new world on the banjo.
It took a few months to bresl through, but now things are coming much more easy, and I am playing the banjo in my band, and regularly doing fill ins and jams.
I have had 2 lessons from Hamish Davidson but have leart most stuff from youtube. There is some great material there.
I have an Epiphone MB250, and have spent a bit of money getting the setup perfect and putting in a new rim and tonering. Sounds fantastic now.
Its a great fun instrument.
Andrew
