Tassie frailers?

From eleshiacatherine on 4/19/2014 3:37:49 AM

I'm heading to Hobart 2nd May for about 10 days and just wondering if there are any frailers either in Hobart or surrounds who may know of local open back builders. I couldn't find any links online.

With Thanks: eleshiacatherine

Thanks Piccolo and RJWMitchel for that info. Piccolo, I actually own a White Swallow "Old Timey" which is beautifully made and has incredible sustain (but I find the the finger board a bit narrow - compared to my Mike Ramsey which is my No1 banjo). I will follow up on the McCanns tip as soon as I get to Hobart!

Hi, you might want to try Macfies music as well. they are just up the road from McCanns. I bought my banjo there and have violin lessons there. I live near Hobart so PM me if you want

There is only one person I know of who has built anything locally - it is Chris Vonderborch who built a 5 string banjo-ukulele ad a kit banjo from Stewart McDonald. Mcfies has an entry level goldtone I think all the other banjos at McCanns and cFies are nowhere near comparable to what you already have. Chris lives out near Port Arthur.

I have built a couple fo 5-string primitive fretless frailing machines but just for fun and they really are primitive. I play with a couple fo local groups - The Hobart Smiths, The Original Cutouts and The Scary Family Band.

The Scary Family Band will be busking at the Bream Creek Markets and at Salamanca Markets the weekend you are in Hobart. Old Man Luedeke will be playing on the saturday evening at the yacht club.

There is als the Hobart Old Time String band which meets on Thursday evenings. Check em out on the net.

You can reach me through the Original Cutouts blog originalcutouts.com or our face book page.

Hope this helps.
