Photos of my #3 Sultana

From ChefJeff on 5/19/2017 8:21:36 PM

Hi,

I think I have successfully loaded a few pictures of my #3 Sultana to my album.  To answer a  few questions, the serial number places it as being made in 1930.  It looks to be all original to my uneducated eye except for possibly the rod for the mute.  It has a strange shape that I have not seen in pictures before.  I'll get a picture posted, and maybe Polle or someone else can confirm whether it is period or not.

Speaking of mutes, does anybody have a mute lever they would like to sell?  There is a site on ebay that sells new reproductions, but I would prefer an original lever if I can find one.

I haven't decided yet whether I want to have this refurbished or just enjoy it for a while.  I'm not a professional, so the banjo won't be going anywhere or seen by anyone except a few musician friends.  I may re-glue the few loose spots on the pearloid, and a little guitar polish would probably do wonders, but anything more extensive may have to wait for a while.  I definitely need to get my sweet wife some jewelry first for letting me buy the banjo.  I got something gold and now it is her turn.

Hi, Jeff, and congrats on the Sultana! The mute lever, or "spoon", can be easily obtained from Tom Camp at:
billcampbanjos.com/PROD01.htm
The parts he sells are made using original tooling and match period parts perfectly. Good hunting!

I found an original one and had it returned to my 1923 #3.... I use it all the time.
It's worth it to look around. Some east coast banjo collector had a "box of parts."

A mint and original spoon/activator assembly is on its way to Jeff - it should arrive the coming week, I take.

Polle,
Received the spoon and rod assembly. I can't thank you enough for your help.
