I have a BD Serenader Silver Bell with no serial number on its dowel stick. (There is a Serenader for sale on line also with no serial number). It seems to me very unlikely that dowel sticks on two banjos which look identical have been replaced.
I have been told that it is a late 1940's, mid 50's, and also a late 60's model. It seems to be very solid and heavy with an Oettinger tailpiece, like other pre 1938 BD banjos but the head stock has been described as definitely a later Gretsch banjo. Any other insights? Every original BD banjos I have seen have the Oettinger tailpiece and all Gretsch BD banjos I have seen have the Gretsch tailpiece. I have learned that identifying these banjos can be hard to nail down, but there must be some other Gretsch BD owners out there who can shed some light on this. Thanks.
