Joe Mac - hero!

Just posted this in the UK5 group - but it's worth a wider audience!

Morning all,

Went and saw Joe Mac last night - after my posting some months ago, where I talked about my learning journey so far, he kindly offered to give me some help.

So, battling the tropical monsoon that was engulfing Northamptonshire last night, I bravely headed towards Joe's home. What a nice chap - arrived to a warming cup of coffee and a general chat about the addiction we suffer from (banjoitis). Joe was very kind about my banjo - I love it, but I know it's a mass produced banjo from the far east and not a hand made special from the 1930's! But, he was suitably complimentary about it.

He asked me what I could play - the real answer is nothing, but I started off with one of my 4 party pieces. Joe was really helpful and took me through where I was going wrong, but, better than that, he didn't say I was going wrong. He was really good at instead of destroying my little bit of confidence, just showing me a better way.

I think I learnt more in a couple of hours last night than I could ever have hoped for. Joe's clear instruction is worth more than mere money to me - I felt that we achieved in a couple of hours, more than I would have done in 6 months on my own.

I'd say to anyone in my position - find a Joe - just a bit of encouragement and some direction on how you can improve is gold dust to us learners.

So, I've got some stuff to work on - then I'll be back to hassle Joe again!

Just in case I wasn't clear enough above - Joe: You're a star - many many thanks for your help last night.
