From dewbanjo on 7/24/2014 3:39:44 PM

I want to pickup a set of strings,,, but don't know what type I should get??  I want to keep a backup set in my case.  Plus, if I need to change in a few months if needed..

What do you use??

I had the same problem when I recently bought a Gold Tone BUT.
Gold Tone didn't respond to my question and after a little online research I bought a set of Aquila 42 U strings. Haven't used them yet, but they should be fine.

I just noticed that you have a BUC. There are dozens of banjo uke sets that will fit a concert size instrument. I was concerned because the tenor size is usually tuned DGBE and Gold Tone warns against tuning the factory installed strings to cGEA.

I use regular aquila concert ukulele strings (7U) on my BUC. They work great!

Ok, Aquila.... what's the difference between 42 U and 7U??

42 U is designated for banjo ukes String length is 33.4 " which I needed for the tenor banjo uke.
7U is standard concert size (29.9") and can be used on all concert ukes, including banjo ukes.

Thanks for the "help"... I'll pick-up a set of 7U then I could use them for my Fender Uke (concert) or the BUC.. when/if needed..

You need to try different Manufacturer's strings to see what kind of tone you like best.

Aquila has several kinds of Banjolele strings. They are "nylgut".
AQ28U for gCEA has a wound C string.
AQ42U for gCEA has a red series C(presumably wound).
AQ90U for gCEA are red series. These are hi performance and high wear strings.
Martin M600 are fluorocarbon and smaller in diameter than the Aquilas.
If you are using a Low G you might try Worth Clear Fluorocarbon.
I think the Martins have a little more punch than Aquilas. If you use an aggressive attack in your playing style you might try these.
A friend of mine recently changed out His wound C string on his 5 string with an Aquila wound Red. He wasn't/isn't comfortable with it right now. Its only been installed for a month so who knows?

Morning IamNoMan, thanks for the information. I put a set of red Aquilas on my concert uke...they are "ok", but will probably be changed soon...

I am going shopping soon, and will pickup a set(s) of Martins M600. I need to play my banjo uke a little longer before I change out the strings. But I'll try them too on my uke.
