A Good Day on the Banjo

From Gymbal31 on 2/20/2011 11:32:56 AM

I've been wanting to learn "Salty Dog Blues" just about since I started playing.  I got tab from the Hangout and there's a tab for it in the back of the Tony Trischka book (I had the book for my classes last year) but I just couldn't really get any of them down.  They just didn't seem to work right for me for some reason.

Last month I got the "Scruggs Corner" book.  It's a book of sixty tabs of Scruggs tunes transcribed over the years by Jack Hatfield for Banjo Newsletter's Scruggs Corner column.  For some reason, the "Salty Dog Blues" arrangement in the book worked for me.  I just took a look at it for the first time last night, worked at it a bit this morning and all of a sudden I had the down the neck break down (I know, that's a very clunky sentence).

I'm sure some of it has to do with having heard that song since I was small and watching the Darling family do the song on "Andy Griffith" reruns (on the show, Charlene sings it and until last year, I always sang the lyrics "...or I won't be your gal at all." I had to get used to "man" instead of "gal").  Also, I heard the Scruggs version a lot over the summer.  I run a golf course and I am often mowing grass all day with my iPod on so I've heard the song ALOT!

This arrangement is not the most difficult thing in the world.  There's nothing in it that I haven't learned how to do elsewhere.  It really is a case of just putting things I've learned into the order that is required for this song.

Still, despite the rain outside, I feel pretty good right now.  I've got new song to drive my family crazy with.

Isn't it great when you get a song that when you play it, it sounds like something. For me, even if it isn't smooth or I dont have it completely down to memory, it feels good to pick something that sounds like the song. Keep pickin !!
