I like Mary Z's tab books and CDs.

From Tim Sander on 11/14/2011 7:29:46 AM

I bought several of Mary Z. Cox's CDs and tab books.  She plays a very structured style, I think, and her tabs are simple and easy to learn from.  I keep trying new tunes and have about a dozen in various states of learning right now.  I recommend them highly as beginners tools.

I am enjoying Ken Perlman's Clawhammer Style Banjo book and dvds. The dvds aren't very well transferred but it is amazing how much watching him and hearing him do the songs helps me out.

Thanks for your kind words about my music and tab books.
I try to set my tabs up to be clear and simple with lots of repetition so that folks may learn the tunes quickly--then add his/her own embellishments after the tune is firmly in your head. :) All of my cds were meant for easy listening--not instruction--but I received so many requests for tabs that I put together the books so that folks could have a starting point. :)

Mary, would you please consider putting up an example of a tab? Thanks, Yvette

Right now, I've moved to a Mac and am having trouble posting some pix and files--if I can ever figure this out--will post a tab :)

I should note here that I've found that some of Mary's tabs are in unconventional tunings/keys, so learning one of these may confuse things a lot when you try to play it with others playing in the more accepted key/tuning. An example is Waterbound, which she tabbed in a double D tuning and is a joy to play, but doesn't work well when the jam is playing it in G.
