This is written by Patrick Costello. I have downloaded a copy, (which by the way is free). I was just wondering if anybody has made any good progress by using this method only?

I have it along with a half dozen or more others by various authors. I can't say much about any except that I don't practice or work out of any of them enough to make the kind of progress I wish I could. Too much time spent on work and tv...not enough on banjo. The entire key is practice time.

Thanks for replying. I am afraid that books and internet will more than likely be my sole source of tutoring, as other players seem to be non-existent in my locality. Many thanks.

Will, I have the same problem. Another resource to use is the old time jam site. It's good for learning to play along, etc. Go to oldtimejam.com. The guy who set it up did a wonderful thing. I find his tabs hard to follow and play, but the music to play along with is great.

Many thanks for taking the time to add another reply. I am already aware of this site, and yes you are right, it is very good to try and play along to (they also have a great t-shirt for sale). Another thing that I try to do is to use a program called audacity. I record myself playing chords on guitar or banjo, and then play/record over the top of that.

I got my very beginning learning to play clawhammer from Pat & Patrick Costello and is the main reason i use my middle finger . David Holt was also a great beginning .

YES! Using Pat's book and watching his videos along with his Dad's videos preety much were all I neede to get going. Plus you can't beat free for the price. Now I also learn songs out of the Tim Jumper banjo player's songbook. I can now play between 40-50 songs by memory after about 1 1/2 years since I started. I'm pretty happy about all that!

Hi Will, In the same situation as you, downloaded Pats book, watched his videos, "ol time jam and Mike Everson(or Iverson sorry Mike) and keep a keep eye on this site. its fun and frustrating at the same time. Will look at byung a few more books along the way. When i first started I bought a very expensive piccolo banjo, a beautiful instrument, then a bought the bottom of the range open back number, which almost acts as a wobble board. I have a oakridge resonator, thats not bad..but its not the sound I want, so I have spent so much on instruments, I have set up my own workshop and bought Randy Cordels plans and am making my own open back banjo. I must admit, to sort out all the tecnicalities, I started on cigar box guitars, onto my 4th. Thats mostly to sort out all the jargon, scale lenghts etc etc. I would just hate to make a mess of good wood I am saving for the banjo. I have also made a canjo and a ukelele...big learning curve. I started with Patrick's books and videos. I went to two of his Banjo Retreats. The last one he invited to teach the beginners. Great guy and a wonderful time. If you need one on one help I'd be happy to Skype or Google Hangout. l

I'm in the sane situation: no teacher near home. Not even close. I've tried a lot of videos and books, Pat's among others. His was ok, I guess, but I couldn't get much done with it. So far the one that has worked best for me is the "Elements of clawhammer banjo" dvd by Chris Coole. Other thing you might wanna consider is to look for a teacher via skype. There are some of them here and it will definitely help you move faster. Best of luck!

I learned from The How and Tao and from Patricks you tube videos
I really like his approach . I now use other books too but H and T are my main go to book...I printed the whole thing for free at his suggestion and I like it.
