Might as well kick this group off by asking for peoples favourite Canadian bluegrass or Old Time musician or group. I like the Spinney Brothers myself (and they are from my neck of the woods to boot!)

I'd have to say that Chris Coole and Arnie Naiman are my favourite Canadian clawhammer/old time players.
The Foggy Hogtown Boys are a great BG group.

Well, I don't listen to bluegrass too much anymore, but I will second that Jim, about Chris and Arnie. I also really love the banjo-playing of Jason Romero (don't think he's a native Canadian, but he lives here now) and the fiddling of Erynn Marshall... who is a Canadian, but lives in the US now. And also Marc Nerenberg. Be sure to check out some of his videos on Youtube.

Chris and Arnie are great pickers, no doubt.

Ah... I forgot about Marc. I've only heard his stuff on here, but it's great. I wish he'd come to Ontario.
I also forgot about Sam Allison and Teilhard Frost. I first met them as the bass and washboard players for the wonderful old time group Flapjack. They now go by the name of Sheesham & Lotus.

Ohhh yeah, I love Sheesham & Lotus. I run across them playing in Downtown Kingston all the time. I contacted Teilhard one time and asked him some old-time related questions. He's a super nice guy.

Just attended a Chris Coole concert last night in Cambridge. What a performance! It was a small crowd but he held us all spellbound.

I'm also a fan of Arnie Naiman's music, both with Chris and also the Albemarle Ramblers. I'm with Jim...would love see Marc perform in Ontario.
As far as Bluegrass goes the Foggies are of course great, but there are lots of local groups in Southwestern Ontario which are pretty darn fine too!

Wow...I'm really honoured to find my name on this list. I feel like a bit of a fraud, though. I think I trick you into thinking I'm a good banjo player by distracting you with the emotion of the song, which is what I always emphasize. Both of my sons are actors, and I think I've learned a lot from them about allowing yourself to really feel the emotion you're trying to convey. Trying to get the listener to share that emotion, and really feel something, is always my objective. I leave the real fancy picking to others.
Speaking of fancy pickers, One of my favourite Canadian players would have to be Cathy Fink...Okay, she's moved back to the US of A, but, if I recall correctly, she took up the banjo when she was living here in the Great White North.
(and PS: honoured and favourite are spelled right, no matter what that spell=-checker keeps trying to tell me!)

Jim Yates says:

Yes, Cathy is my all time clawhammer hero. I've learned more from her than from anyone, even the Seegers, going back to the Cathy & Duck days.
Hey Marc, my spell checker needs a few lessons too.

Some bluegrass groups that I miss:
Heartbreak Hill
Streets & Hills
Humber River Valley Boys
York County Boys
King City Slickers
Station Road (Where is Denis LePage these days)

It's tough to beat the Foggies. I am more of a Bluegrass fan, but I picked up Chris Coole's latest CD and really enjoy it, start to finish.

Dave jack (our very own LazyArcher) is a wonderful picker.

Good call Inniepie. Speaking of Dave Jack, I've already mentioned Station Road, but what about The Dixie Flyers, Bruce County Grass and Hard Ryde? Who is Dave playing with these days?

Jim Yates says:
2/21/2011 1:18:16 PM

I haven`t seen him in years, but John Saunders, the banjo picker for Big Redd Ford was a super player.

RB5 says:

I remember Dave Jack way back in the early 80's playing at the Hornpayne bluegrass festival in northern Ontario. He was playing with the Dixie Flyers back then. I felt bad for him trying to play the banjo and swatting moskitos all at the same time. He had it mastered though, he would only swat while he was playing in the open g runs. RB5.

From the old days: The Humber River Valley Boys (a.k.a. The Humber Ditch Boys), Kent County Pickers.
In O.T., Sweet Evening Breeze, which morphed into J.P. Wringwort and the Heartbreak of Psoriasis - Paul Hornbeck on banjo.
These days, Sheesham and Lotus for sure, Darren! Nice guys, and you can often catch them at Market Square busking on weekends. They set up at the antique market beside a vendor who's also a musician.
Uh, no, Marc, you didn't trick anyone. You show emotion, yes, but you're creative and inventive in your playing, too.

New on the scene is a really great little band from the Toronto scene called "The Slocan Ramblers". I get such a kick out of these guys because they're great players, really nice young lads, and their enthusiasm is infectious. Frank Evans is the best young banjo player I've heard. I would recommend looking them up ! (They play the Cloak & Dagger every Tuesday night)
