Got One, Just Great

From BlowingRockNC on 1/10/2014 2:24:21 PM

Yesterday, I received via UPS a Gold Tone 5-string Cello Banjo, with the medium strings for tuning in G. I got to tinker around for about 30 minutes, then went to my usual Thursday night OT jam. Almost everyone there loved it at first sight, and they all wanted to play it, and they all seemed to love it. All that is, except for one new person, who said the whole idea of a cello banjo was stupid. I ignored his comments. Anyway, the jam went very well, and I think the cello banjo fit in very well, but you would have to ask the others to truly find out. It has a great sound...a low somber rumble. It was a tad hard on my fingers, but I'll get use to it, but it was just plain easy to play. I play it with finger picks like I do a regular banjo, and the picks seem to make the individual strings sound clearer and not get jumbled up. A couple of clawhammer players played it, and the sounds got quite muddled up with their style of playing, but I imagine they could solve that with a little practice. I got 5th string spikes at 7 and 9 (per my request, the seller filed the spikes down so no sharp edges). I've played it for a couple of hours today, playing and singing many of my favorite songs. I also continue to play my regular 5-string banjos, because I can see how it would easy to get too use to the thick strings and the wide spaces between the strings, thus making it hard to switch back to a regular banjo. Well, I just wanted to say hello to the others and betters who have gone before me.

Congrat's on the CEB-5! I love mine! I love moving from my Sullivan, to the Woodsong's longneck, then to the Cello banjo. It seems to help my left hand become more flexible and improving the speed at which I can change chords -- due to the thicker stings and neck of the cello banjo, and the wide fret spacings of the longneck. Maybe I need to keep a lookout for a Piccolo Banjo to round-out the set?!

My wife is getting a little fatigued at the number of banjos she finds when she comes into my cave. One thing is for sure, the Cello Banjo is a keeper. Good luck with the Piccolo.
